AFE International — Region 7

The world's five tallest buildings are in Dubai-UAE, Mecca-Saudi Arabia, New York-USA, Taipei-Taiwan, and Shanghai-China. The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur-Malaysia, dropped to sixth place when the Freedom Tower in New York was topped off. However, the planned Saudi Kingdom Tower will take the title of world's tallest building with over two-hundred floors when completed sometime within the next five years, and in-turn dropping New York's Freedom Tower to sixth tallest. With height comes complexity. All buildings today, whether a four story low rise office building or two-hundred story-plus complex, all are more complicated and their systems and controls more sophisticated than they were just a few years ago. With complexity comes criticality, or critical systems challenges. The final challenge — economic sustainability.
