Achieve Predictive Maintenance Results with Vibrations

 

This presentation takes a results-oriented approach to Predictive Maintenance from many years of experience with implementing and conducting programs and witnessing program limitations and failures. This approach is based on many assessments of baseline machine condition and troubleshooting machine faults with difficult or unusual circumstances.

This discussion will focus on condition monitoring which is the bedrock for predictive maintenance and vibration which is the key technology for rotating/reciprocating machinery condition monitoring and diagnostics. A detailed procedure or template is not offered, but instead you can take away one or more gold nuggets of experience that could help you in establishing or upgrading a cost-effective predictive maintenance program. This discussion is not based on or does not promote specific software, instruments, or publications.

Walter F. Strong

Mr. Strong is an independent consulting engineer and owner of Strong Technology Company. He has over 50 years of practical engineering experience in sound and vibrations with emphasis on testing and measurements. He specializes in diagnosis and correction of machinery faults that have challenging or unusual circumstances. He utilizes measurements of vibration, audible sound, ultrasound, motor current analysis and structural vibrations. His hands-on experience for corrective actions includes shaft alignment with a laser system, dynamic balancing, structural modifications, and noise control.

Mr. Strong has setup several condition monitoring programs for predictive maintenance of rotating machinery. He has worked on many types and sizes of machines in a variety of settings including utility power plants, cogeneration plants, manufacturing plants, and ships of many types and sizes. He has conducted on-site training on various machine and facility maintenance topics. He has taught several short courses including Practical Analysis of Shipboard Vibrations at U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point, New York and Shipboard Reliability-Based Maintenance at Impact Engineering, Inc. in Tacoma, Washington.

He has developed a portable vibration analyzer (Machine MATE) for condition monitoring, a test system for acoustical material properties, a quality control system for precision ball bearings, and a balancing system for magnetic shaft couplings. He is an inventor on US patent 7,294,947 B2 Apparatus for Transferring Torque Magnetically (magnetic shaft coupling).

Mr. Strong graduated from University of Hartford with a B.Sc. Degree in mechanical engineering that included courses in acoustics and vibrations. He is a board-certified member of Institute of Noise Control Engineers and received Level-2 certification from Vibration Institute. He has authored and presented several technical papers.
